For the past 20 years, the Bone Marrow Donor Programme has been providing that one chance of survival to hundreds of patients suffering from terminal blood-related diseases. Where their only chance is to have a bone marrow transplant and there’s no matching brother or sister able to donate healthy blood stem cells, they come to us.
The BMDP manages Singapore’s only register of volunteer bone marrow donors and with just a 1 in 20,000 chance of finding a matching donor, we are absolutely committed to building the local donor register into a true national asset able to help all Singaporeans have that second chance.
What we do literally means the difference between life and death and that is why we make a promise to find a donor for every patient. We reach out to all sectors within our community to share the word and let people know that every one of us has the power to save a life – then we give them the opportunity to sign up and actually do something about it.
We need YOUR help!
(1) REGISTER as a volunteer bone marrow donor
If you are an individual:
– In good health
– Between the age of 18 to 49
– With no history of blood disorders or cancers
You may be someone’s hope of a future.
How to register?
– Visit our donor drives, or walk in to the BMDP office from 9am-6pm on Mondays to Fridays. The procedure takes less than 5 minutes!
1. Fill in a registration form
2. Use our specialised cotton bud swabs to swab DNA from your inner cheeks
That’s it!
We will then send your swabs for tissue-typing tests and add you to the BMDP register.
The BMDP bears all costs for the entire process through fundraising. You are not required to bear any costs at all.
(2) SPONSOR a tissue-typing test / DONATE to BMDP to help spread the movement
Each newly recruited bone marrow donor’s mouth swabs have to be sent for tissue-typing tests in order for us to gather the DNA data. Each test costs $150. To recruit 5,000 new potential donors each year to save more people, we need to raise $750,000 for tissue-typing tests alone. We will need every donation / sponsorship we can get in order to continue saving needy patients. Your donation / sponsorship, big or small, will be deeply appreciated.
All donations will be given 2 times tax exemption.
(3) VOLUNTEER with us and assist in donor recruitment, awareness-building and education, editorial work and online communications, publicity, etc.
(4) MAKE MORE NOISE to help us spread the movement to others in Singapore, and even beyond. Join this group in support of the BMDP’s mission!
