In 2004, we introduced a new project – Holistic Support for People affected by Cancer (HSPC). HSPC aims to help adult and pediatric cancer patients and their families develop an overall lifestyle that enables them to fight cancer and prevents deterioration of the disease. This life-affirming program gives cancer patients valuable skills designed to enhance, not replace, conventional treatment programs and disease management.
HSPC, based at Holistic Lifestyle Centre, provides a safe and supportive environment for patients and their family and friends to achieve a higher quality of living and get the best chance to extend life. In a way, this program helps patients fight to get well. In time, patients will react better to conventional medical treatment. Studies have shown that patients with a changed lifestyle and diet, consistently live longer than those who use medical treatment alone. Equally important is the fact that HSPC members report a higher quality of life.
We have 3 main services under our Cancer Holistic Supports:
1. Gift of Good Food This is an outreach to cancer sufferers and survivors. Since May 2003, all cancer sufferers and survivors whether rich or poor, can participate in our program. A stressful lifestyle and inappropriate diet can impair our health. Our volunteers deliver organic vegetables and other food to registered members island-wide on a weekly basis, encouraging and supporting them to change to contaminant-free healthy diet. Sponsorship for organic vegetables is available for cancer sufferers and survivors who need financial assistance..
2. Home Visits Volunteer-Befrienders make frequent visits to cancer patients and survivors in diverse home situations, with the goal of understanding their trials, needs and experiences in the course of their recovery. Armed with useful knowledge and sincerity, we strive to achieve some semblance of sharing and caring through warmth, friendship and love by our combined efforts.
3. Free Counselling Counselling is often an important part of the recovery process, especially for those under mental and emotional stresses and those having difficulties coping with various life issues. Cancer patients, survivors and their families are welcome to take advantage of the expertise of trained consultants / therapists.
